Epithets

In Homer's epic The Iliad, major characters, such as "godlike Achilles" or "ivory-armed Hera" are described by short epithets to help ascertain their traits and fill out the meter. Below is my attempt to create my own small legacy, by ascribing myself four such epithets.

Avid Reader

I especially love narnia
Growing up, my books were as much a friend to me as any breathing person. I’d spend a lot of my free time squirreled away with a classic, or a work of fantasy or just a plain feel-good novel. I loved the way that words could paint pictures in your mind. As I could older and could see the relevance of how themes in books could teach I got more interested in the dual layer of thought provocation that a well written story could offer. Books improve the mind as exercise does the body and l devote as much time as I can spare to the joy of reading to this day.

Quick Learner

Focus
Anything worth doing is worth doing well. As such, I have a hard time transitioning from being a beginner at something to being competent, whether the task is menial labor or an intellectual pursuit. This last summer while working on the line at a chocolate factory I was told that I picked up working on the machines faster than anyone the workers there had seen. I’m pretty sure that this is not due to some latent chocolate-related talent, but more to the fact that I was determined not to fall behind. I’m very self-motivated and can focus pretty intently and as such have always been quick to learn new things.

Water Lover

Washington State: Seattle and rain. I love this picture ... it's so "Seattle" ...This is an amazing picture!

Growing up in the Seattle area, rain is a very familiar concept. Add to that the years I spent as a swimmer and water polo player it becomes obvious that water is not something I shy away from. To fully be comfortable in the water I learned not only to swim but was also trained as a lifeguard. As a result of these three things I spent most of my free time in high school at a pool, with the weather outside more drizzly than dry and can honestly say that while being damp isn’t always pleasant I love the experience that being around water can bring.

Brightly Colored

To a casual observer, I’m sure I appear kind of drab. With pale skin and dark hair, “bright” might not be the first word that comes to mind. However, if you look closer you can observe the clear green of my eyes and pink tone to my skin. Along with the physical I have a habit of often being in a good mood. In addition I love to add color wherever I go, be it with bright nail polish, or colorful throw pillows, or highlighter to mark up my notes, or even fun socks hidden under the black of my work uniform. I believe that bright colors add interest, and as I love being interested I strive to be bright myself.

  1. I love bright colors too! My favorite color is yellow which reminds me of lightning and being crazy like lightning. I love yellow smiley faces and very bright colors. During the summer and fall I love all the colors and I'm beaming, however during the winter I tend to get a little sad because of the dull colors. I completely agree with you COLORS ARE AWESOME!

  2. What are your favorite kind of books? Personally I don't think I could stand having water fall from the sky all the time, so enjoy your tolerance while you can.

  4. GIRL I was born in Vancouver, WA and I'm glad I'm not the only one who's happy when it rains!

I did eventually cave and buy an umbrella, though, because being wet all day at school is no good :)
